Jeff got it covered - I think it's always been for Wordpress. Wordpress.com's being free is, well, wonderful. But for all the restrictions, it's tough too sometimes.

However, there is a "Mister Linky" plugin, but there is also the regular version, which is basically just you modifying your header.php, your home.php (or index.php) and single.php file. If wordpress.com allows you to modify your .php templates (apparently they do, you've mod'd your site quite well), you should be able to do it!

It works on self-hosted WordPress blogs, but unfortunately not wordpress.com blogs.
