Great week this week. We did a cool arrangement of Mercy Me's Gloria (Angels We Have Heard).

I like your new Sunday Setlists graphic. I kind of agree with you about the Christmas songs. I don't know that very many people worship when they're singing them. I think they like to sing them because that's just what you do at Christmas.

@alastair - yeah, I ripped it off from Travis@
@russ - yep, that's the Gloria that we did as well
@david - glad I'm not alone, think I'll blog about that this week!

I'm with you on Christmas songs. Really a struggle for me to do them. I try and rearrange them to fit our vibe but it's tough.

Set went great today, used a new loop I did for "With Everything" by Hillsong and overall I was really pleased how it all came together.

We sang 1 Christmas song the last 2 weekends (11/30 and 12/7) and tied them to our scripture/Advent time. This next week we'll add one more and then the 21st it will be all out Christmas. Sorry guys--I think you'd better give on this one and I think for just cause. Singing them won't hurt you and you don't get "super worshiper" points by holding them off. I agree that it is a cultural thing with the American church to sing all of the carols early in the season.. it's just the way we were raised. Don't fight it!

A good but different day for me. Read on!

1. Great new logo!!

2. I relate with the Christmas songs thing as well! We did one this week, and then the children also did a Christmas-y song, though it was new to all.

3. Had a maybe unusual God-story to tell this Sunday on my setlist post! God uses blogs! Very cool. :)

Great Sunday Setlist! How did "Love the Lord" go for you guys? We might be doing it in soon.

We are supposed to have full blown rehearsals this week with dancers and all for the Christmas service. It's looking bleak with my wife's father's condition worsening. I agree that Christmas music should be withheld until you absolutely have to play it. Good set, Fred.

We haven't done any Christmas music yet, either. I'll probably do one next week and ramp it up towards Christmas Eve... but I definitely hold off on them as long as I can.

Like others have said, Christmas songs are sometimes hard to shoe-horn into a worship service, but for some reason "Joy to the World" and "Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus" actually worked toward that end this week. Especially hard to believe on that last song.

Next week I'm looking forward to doing "What Child is This" because of the "lies He in such mean estate" verse. For real. The wording is really archaic, but the message in that verse is hugely inspiring. And if it's done with a good groove and heavy bass (with a healthy tom backbeat), it *should* fit well stylistically.

And on the 21st I found a killer version of "Pat-a-Pan" that I arranged chorally that the choir's going to do. I have no idea who did the CD. I'd ripped the disc a couple of years ago and didn't do well on my ID3 tags. It's weird how they're able to take 18th century songs and make them groove and sound cool.

Thanks for the opporunity here, Fred!

This is a cool feature. Soon you shall have my header entry.

A question for the readers. I find a bit of vitriolic attitude toward Christmas music by many modern worship leaders. That concerns me as the Incarnation is the apex of God's revelation of Himself to us. And since worship both glorifies God and shapes our thinking on Him, shouldn't we want to declare with passion lines like...

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

As far as them being "story songs," is not our faith, as compared to almost every other, a historical faith thus it contains a story that should be preached AND sung. In this day of doing so many "how to" sermons, should we at least not do "story" one time per year in our musical worship?

jordan fowlers last blog post..Fill in the Blanks: Everybody wants ___________, but nobody wants to (do) __________.
• Louise Knight · 1 year ago
I hear you, jordan, but have to say that 75% of my congregation are so busy thinking about what on earth the 'curse' is, that they can't sing the rest.
